Hello everyone and welcome back to my series on automotive tools and how-to's for the new weekend warrior auto mechanic. In the past, we've covered a lot of tools, and several basic how-to's but in today's great article, I'm going to teach you a little walk around for a common and annoying issue. If you are like many people out there you likely get a little annoyed when you disconnect your car battery for maintenance and you reconnect it just to find that you have to reprogram your cars stereo all over again. It's happens to everyone, and I know I hate doing it on my vehicles and if you tend to buy fancy aftermarket head units that have a very large number of functions that need to be set up each and every time it loses power you know what I mean.
So with that being said, here's how you can walk around that issue. If you go to a local electronics store, something like a Radio Shack, you can by cigarette lighter plugs that plug into your car's cigarette lighter. It will have 2 leads that come off it. If you can buy a 9v battery connector, just crimp or solder the negative and positive leads together between the two connectors. If not, you will have to solder them to the battery - but be sure that you don't overheat the battery as it could explode. It's easiest just to find a spare 9V connector. Once you've connected your 9V battery to the cigarette lighter plug that you bought, just plug it into your car's cigarette lighter. Now you should be free to disconnect your cars battery without losing your car's radio presets!
